Cozumel's Climate and Things to Do When it Rains |
![]() |
The climate in Cozumel is always comfortable. It´s warm year round with a few days of "el norte", cold winds coming in from the north in late December, or early January, and a few in February from time to time. The average temperature is 27 degrees C.
There are two rainy seasons, one in the spring, and another in the fall. Rainy days are very nice in Cozumel as it will rain, and have warm, sunny skies peeping out all through all but the stormiest of days. When it rains, it pours and the streets are very flooded. Especially deep areas will stall your motor if you have a vehicle, so try to avoid them. Some areas to watch are:
(Streets run East/West, Avenues run North/South)
I am sure there are other areas that are usually flooded but these areas are on the main routes of the town. Be careful for holes in the road that you can´t see because they are underwater.
The eastern coast is on the windward side and is very picturesque with all its rough waves, limestone formations, and white sand beaches. It is best to rent a vehicle and go around the island on the beach road, stopping at various beaches and enjoying the rustic bars and restaurants along the way.
Often, when the western side of the island is covered with clouds and rain, the eastern side is sunny, bright, and clear. You never really know unless you go over to check.
If there has been a storm in the area recently, you may find more seaweed on these eastern beaches than normally. There may be trash that was washed in with the seaweed, too. There will also be more sharks in the water, as they will be feeding on creatures that were injured in the storm. Not a big danger, just be cautious.

There are additional shows periodically of local and out-of-town artists. There is a small Maya dwelling set up in the gardens. It is tended to by a Maya couple in the Maya tradition. She will give you a sample of her tortillas as she cooks them on a grill inside the home. They grow herbs in the raised gardens that the Mayans used, too.
